Zuni Pueblo Pottery

Erma Kalestewa Homer
and
Brandon Kalestewa

(Erma's son)

Sold Out

Erma's and Brandon's bowls

are beautifully crafted and finished.

They are fired at very high temperatures

and have the ring of fine porcelain.

The Kalestewas are also known for their

Zuni thin wall pottery.

From the book Southwestern Pottery,
"Kalestewa's resist the electric kiln,
which makes them unlike many Zuni potters.
Erma Kalestewa's style is directly influenced by the old style"

Painted Pottery Owl

This particular owl design is credited
to Nellie Bica, Erma's deceased grandmother.

The use of Owl images is a traditonal Zuni
effigy that Nellie refined.

Some people say the owl is a Zuni storyteller.
That idea would seem to be valid
since the owl, in Zuni, is believed to be a messenger.

The owl is also a symbol of good luck
and cautions us to stay alert.
